Alan Thorold studied social anthropology and psychology at the University of Cape Town and completed a PhD in anthropology at Cambridge University in 1995. He also read African Literature under the tutelage of JM Coetzee in Cape Town. He has taught at universities in Africa and Australia but is happily now freed from the confines of the academic world and works as an independent consultant based in Adelaide.
